I saw this pretty yellow Celandine wildflower at Fort Hill in Eastham on Cape Cod this past week. Calendine is a leafy plant with hairy stems and deep yellow 4-petaled flowers in loose clusters. The flowers are about 3/4″ while the plant grows to 1-3 feet from May to July on wooded edges, which is exactly where I saw it.
I was taking a walk at Fort Hill, looking for new birds, wildflowers and butterflies to photograph. This pretty Pearl Crescent landed on the trail right in front of me and then I saw a pair of them on a clover down the ways a bit.
Pearl Crescent butterflies are orange with black borders, scattered black markings and a wingspan of 1- 1 1/2 “. Their habitat is fields and meadows which is exactly what Fort Hill has to offer.
Pretty little butterflies, don’t you think? I had never seen this one before!
I was so surprised to see a Wild Geranium here on Cape Cod as I was taking a walk along the trail. I did not know that they grew here. I had seen them many times out west as they grow abundantly along the trails.
Pretty flower, don’t you think? I love the vibrant color!
The purple Periwinkles are blooming and so pretty here on Cape Cod. They are part of the Vinca family are are also known as “Running Myrtle.”
Periwinkles grow to about 6″ and are considered a creeping evergreen. Their flowers are about 1″ and pinwheel-like purplish-blue with a white star in the center.
Such a pretty wildflower, don’t you think?
