Chatham has a little park right in the center of town which they use for all sorts of fun events. This time of year many of the businesses make scarecrows with the theme of their business. Here are 2 that I thought were really cute.
The flag was blowing at Chatham Lighthouse the other day. And the sky was blue, blue, blue! What a beautiful day to photograph Chatham Light.
Chatham Light signals boats off of Chatham and Chatham Bar. The building to the right is the Coast Guard Station will go to action when boats are in distress. This is the station that was featured in the Disney movie, The Finest Hours, which is about the the most daring rescue mission in the history of the Coast Guard.
Nauset Light and the CG Station are a must to see if you are ever on Cape Cod. The views are spectacular!
And if you haven’t seen The Finest Hours, make sure you see it too. The story is unbelievable!
As you walk the trails at the Mass Audubon Wildlife Sanctuary in Wellfleet on Cape Cod, you will come across many of these little cages.
“Members of the Day Habilitation program make cages to protect the endangered Diamondback Terrapin Turtle population. This spring they made 25 cages.
These protective cages are delivered to the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary when finished. The staff there knows just where to put the protective cages, since the turtles nest in the same areas every year.
At the end of the summer, the cages are removed after the turtles have hatched. The terrapins, about the size of a quarter, make their way back to the marshes.”
Wellfleet on Cape Cod is known for its oysters. The Wellfleet oysters are grown out and harvested in and from the estuaries of Wellfleet Harbor, located in the Northeastern region of Cape Cod Bay, so they are locally grown!
Wellfleet will host their 16th Annual Oyster Fest on October 15th and 16th which brings in thousands of people for the weekend. It’s supposed to be great fun!
I loved this little oyster boat which is docked in Wellfleet Harbor. I wonder if you can get oysters right there? So cool looking, don’t you think?
It was such fun to go aboard the Coast Guard’s boat, CG36500 which is docked at Rock Harbor for the season. You can go inside and learn all about the greatest Coast Guard small boat rescue in history. It is an amazing story. The movie, The Finest Hours, came out last January is all about the unbelievable feat!
When you are finished there is a little shack across the parking lot with lots of CG36500 memorabilia which you can purchase. I got the latest edition of the book called, Rescue.
If you’re in Rock Harbor, it is a very cool thing to do …and very educational!
