Bearberry shrubs are starting to bloom here on Cape Cod. Bearberry is a trailing, evergreen shrub. Its flowers are tiny white or pink bells, clustered at the branch ends. Its leaves are glossy, leathery and paddle-shaped. In the fall these little flowers will turn into little red berries.
Have you ever seen Bearberry? When we lived in Colorado, Bearberry were known as Kinnikinick. Pretty little plants…love the bell-shaped flower. What do you think?
Anadromous fish runs occur in rivers and streams that drain out of coastal ponds. These systems are used by migratory fish to feed and reproduce. These fish runs provide open and unblocked paths of travel for herring to reach their spawning habitat.
Herring spawn in these fresh water ponds and then live most of their lives in salt water, which is why it is essential to maintain these runs.
We stopped at one of the herring run rivers the other day and were surprised at the number of herring who were swimming upstream to get to the pond to spawn. You can see 4 herring that have just jumped up the little dam to get to the next resting place before they move on upstream again.
It was really fascinating to watch. Have you ever seen a herring run?

There are a lot of this green lichens growing on the trees here on Cape Cod. I presume it grows so abundantly here is because of the humidity and moisture. But, when you get up close, it really is very pretty. And you see it everywhere you look.
Does anyone know what type of lichen it is? Any help would be greatly appreciated! This photograph is really a little clump that is only a couple of inches in diameter.
I was surprised to see the “Please Keep Off the Dunes” sign at Nauset Beach in Orleans on Cape Cod so buried in sand the other day. It’s been pretty windy lately, as you can see by this sign.
Have you been down to Nauset Beach lately?
