Beautiful Northern Flickers In Our Yard On Cape Cod

These two Northern Flickers, part of the woodpecker family,  were foraging in the leaves around our yard, looking for some food. I loved how I could get a photograph of the two of them… one so you can see its front and the other so you can see its back. Their markings are amazing.

In this second photograph you can really see its underside which is so pretty and almost looks like down. Look at those black dots on its feathers. Just beautiful…

Common Eiders At Boat Meadow River On Cape Cod

There is a pair of Common Eiders on Boat Meadow Creek in Eastham on Cape Cod. I’ve seen them recently from the bridge on Bridge Road.

The Common Eider is a large duck, from 23-27″ and usually lives along the coastline in all seasons. It feeds primarily underwater on mollusks by up-ending or swimming with only its head submerged.

It was pretty cool to see  these Common Eiders as I’ve only seen them a couple of times before. Look at the difference in coloring from the male to the female. Have you ever seen one?

Beautiful Red-Bellied Woodpecker In Our Yard On Cape Cod

The Red-bellied Woodpecker is back in our yard here on Cape Cod! We’ve heard his call a lot lately, but haven’t seen him in a while.

I love watching him go up and down the tree, searching for insects, or on our suet holder. He is such a beautiful bird!

Have you ever seen a Red-bellied Woodpecker? Funny how he has red on his head, not on his belly!

Beautiful Carolina Wren On Our Deck Here On Cape Cod

There, on our deck was a beautiful Carolina Wren, most noted with the white stripe over his eye.

I was putting the laundry away yesterday when I saw something out of the corner of my eye. It was a little bird flitting around under the benches on the deck. It was acting like a Wren, with little jerking movements up and down, but I had never seen a Wren here…ever.

I heard a Carolina Wren last summer a few times, as they have a very distinct call, but I had never seen one.

I called Phil in and we both verified that, yes indeed, this was a Carolina Wren and on our deck. What a treat!

I got my camera an clicked away, but the only decent photographs I could get were through the screens.

Beautiful little bird, don’t you think?
