Yesterday was one of those days where, if you want to get out and take a walk, you do it between raindrops. Well, the rain had stopped and the sky didn’t look too dark so I thought I’d walk over to Boat Meadow Beach. Was I in for a big surprise! (Click on blog link for other photos.)
As I walked out the door, I turned around to get my camera and a plastic bag in case it started raining. I was so glad that I grabbed my camera as I saw 4 Whimbrels feeding by the water’s edge. They were just beautiful.
I’ve only see them once before here on Cape Cod at the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary a few years ago, so this was a big treat! It is rare to see them on the Cape, especially four of them together.
They are easily identified by their black and white-striped crown and long “decurved” bill. Have you ever seen a Whimbrel? It certainly made my day!

I have never seen so many Egrets all in one place before. There were Great Egrets and Snowy Egrets all hanging out together on Nauset Marsh. They must be getting ready to migrate down south. (Click on blog link for other photo.)
There were over 45 of them by the little tidal pond. Have you ever seen so many Egrets all together? #capecod #birding #nausetmarsh #forthill
The colorful Baltimore Orioles that we look so forward to seeing every spring have all pretty much migrated the past few days. I can always tell when they are getting ready to go as they eat like there’s no tomorrow right before they leave.
Last week I was going through almost a whole jar of grape jelly every day. There were a lot of hungry Baltimore Orioles and their young ones getting ready for a long trip!
This beauty came by right before they left on Monday and he was one of the brightest orange Baltimore Orioles that I have ever seen. He is just stunning, don’t you think?
Good-bye until next spring… we will certainly miss you and all of your constant chattering and activity over the winter!
I’ve been looking for the Northern Bobwhite at Fort Hill all summer. I’ve heard his call of “Bob-white, bob-white,” but I haven’t been able to find him.
And then we drove up the road one morning last week and there he was… walking down the road. I was able to get a couple of photographs before he ran into the high grass.
Have you seen the Bobwhite at Fort Hill this summer? #eastham #forthill
These 2 Green Herons were so much fun to watch the other morning. It looks like a mother and a young one. (Click on blog link for other photos.)
The larger one would walk along the rail and the little one would follow along. At one point, it looked like they were fighting as the parent tried to get away.
The last photograph almost looks like the parent is reprimanding the little one. So much fun to watch… and then they both flew away!
