We took a ride to Boat Meadow Beach the other morning to have a picnic breakfast and do a little bird-watching. Boy, were we in for a treat! There were 34 Egrets on the far shore on the flats.
Pretty cool, don’t you think? I’ve never seen that many Egrets in one place before!
I have not been to Fort Hill in quite a while because it has been so crowded and the trails are not very wide. It was about 2:00pm and I thought everyone would be at the beach and maybe I could sneak over there and see if there were any wildflowers or butterflies. (Click on blog link for other photo.)
I was right about everyone being at the beach as it was much too hot in the afternoon for a hike so there were plenty of parking spots. But I was wrong about the butterflies and wildflowers. I did not see any of either of them. I guess the drought has not been nice to the wildflowers, thus no butterflies to feed on them.
But, as I was rounding the corner on the trail, I heard a little chirp and looked up in the tree. There was a mom Northern Mockingbird perched way up at the top. And then I saw this little one fly from branch to branch trying to get up there too. As soon as he made it to the top, mom flew away and he started squawking! So cute, don’t you think?
There was a lot of fluttering going on in our Viburnum bushes in the yard, so I went out to investigate. And there I saw 3-4 Eastern Kingbirds diving into the bushes and eating berries. I had never seen them there before. Wow! (Click on blog link to see other photograph.)
Such a beautiful bird, don’t you think? Have you ever seen an Eastern Kingbird?
I love all of the Egrets on Cape Cod, especially the Snowy Egret with its black legs and bright yellow feet! This guy was just waiting for a meal at the salt marsh.
We couldn’t believe how big the little Piping Plover chicks had gotten in the past couple of weeks. It is amazing how fast they grow. We saw this one, as well as many other babies, at Coast Guard Beach.
Beautiful little birds, don’t you think?
