Bufflehead Ducks On Boat Meadows River In Eastham On Cape Cod

The last time I saw a Bufflehead was way out in the ocean off of Coast Guard Beach on Cape Cod many, many years ago. I always loved their black and white coloring and their little diving antics. They are a small, compact duck with a relatively large head.

Male Buffleheads are striking black and white, with iridescent green and purple heads with a large white patch behind the eye. Females are grey-toned with a smaller white patch behind the eye and a light underside.

The name bufflehead is a combination of buffalo and head, referring to the oddly bulbous head shape of the species. This is most noticeable when the male puffs out the feathers on the head, thus greatly increasing the apparent size of the head.

It was such a treat to see these diving ducks so close on the river near my home and so many of them together.

Have you ever seen a Bufflehead?

Welcome To Fort Hill And Nauset Marsh On Cape Cod

I love this photograph of this Seagull standing on the sign for Fort Hill above Nauset Marsh in Eastham on Cape Cod. Fort Hill is one of my favorite places to hike and go birding on Cape Cod. It has a series of trails which  you can take in the woods or out by the marshes.

This Seagull is showing you the map of the area so you can decide what you would like to do!

Cute little Welcome Sign, huh?

Migrating Birds And A Rainbow On Cape Cod To Wish You A Happy New Year!

birdsrainbowyptblog

This flock of birds was flying by on the shore of Wellfleet Bay in migration formation so we quickly got our cameras out and clicked away. And there, as if forming a circle above, was part of a rainbow as we looked up.

Very cool. Wishing you all a Happy New Year and may you find a rainbow in the New Year!

Innovative Seagull Eats A Clam At Boat Meadows On Cape Cod

This Seagull was so much fun to watch as it was trying to open a clam that it had found at the beach inlet in the water. First he leaned headfirst down to get the clam. And then he deposited it on the sand and stared at it.

He then put it back in his beak and started to fly, all of a sudden dropping it on a rock in the water.

He proceded to find it under the watwer, pick it up and swim to shore and have himself a feast. He was one mightly proud seagull!

Pretty amazing, huh? He not only knew where there was a rock under water, but knew exactly where to retrieve the clam once it was smashed.
