“On March 9 of 2013 Atlantic Hurricane cut a 100-foot wide opening in the narrow barrier dune at Ballston Beach in Truro, on Cape Cod. Tons of seawater surged into the freshwater marshes of the upper Pamet River eventually reaching Route 6, and briefly turning the end of Cape Cod into an island.”
Just last year the dunes on Ballston Beach eroded so much from the 2 Nor’easters that we had in the winter that one of the homes on Ballston Beach had to be taken down. It was a sad day.
I took this photograph from the lookout on the Pamet Trail where you can see where the dunes were washed away during the storm in 2013. It is just incredible what Mother Nature can do.
Sunday was another glorious day, between the 2 winter storms, to get out of the house and take a long walk. We learned that the beach is the perfect place to walk in the winter. (Click on the link to see the amazing clouds.) If you bundle up, it doesn’t get much better. There is minimal snow and no ice on the beach.
Sunday was gorgeous… sunny, 40 degrees with little wind. Look at those clouds and the blue, blue water. The sound of the waves was so medicinal… perfect day for a walk on Nauset Beach!
With all of the snow that we have been having the past few days, the birds have been everywhere in our yard… at the feeders, in the bird bath and scrounging for dropped food on the ground. Yesterday we got home later in the morning and there were no birds to be seen. Hmmmm… (Click on blog to see other photograph.)
As we looked out our bedroom window there, under the bush, was a Sharp-shinned Hawk enjoying a meal of one of the Mourning Doves. He was content as could be and furiously picking away at what was left.
We got our cameras out and clicked away. He was in just the right light. Notice the beady eyes… that’s why they are such great hunters. By the time he flew away, there wasn’t even a bone left, just a pile of feathers. Wow…
We’ve driven by this bridge on the way into Wellfleet hundreds of times but never knew you could walk over it. It is a really cool bridge that leads to a little island with hiking trails and lots of benches to enjoy the beautiful views of the salt marsh. I loved the photograph of the bridge going over to the island and then the one walking back to town. So pretty, don’t you think?
What an unexpected surprise to find such a gem right in the middle of Wellfleet! Have you ever walked across Uncle Tim’s Bridge?
