Rock Harbor in Orleans on Cape Cod is pretty empty this time of year. There are only a couple of boats to see and the docks look pretty empty.
But a pretty photograph from the Eastham side of Rock Harbor looking back…
There are still a couple of boats in Rock Harbor on Cape Cod. This big fishing boat looks like it has made many fishing trips out into the ocean!
Such a cool place! Have you ever been there? It’s where they dock The Finest Hours rescue boat, the CG 36500 in the summertime for all the tourists to visit!
It was such fun to go aboard the Coast Guard’s boat, CG36500 which is docked at Rock Harbor for the season. You can go inside and learn all about the greatest Coast Guard small boat rescue in history. It is an amazing story. The movie, The Finest Hours, came out last January is all about the unbelievable feat!
When you are finished there is a little shack across the parking lot with lots of CG36500 memorabilia which you can purchase. I got the latest edition of the book called, Rescue.
If you’re in Rock Harbor, it is a very cool thing to do …and very educational!
You can see why the boats can enter and exit Rock Harbor in Orleans on Cape Cod only before or after high tide. Otherwise, they could get stuck in Cape Cod Bay or in the harbor for many hours waiting for the tide to change.
You can see the “buoy trees” which mark the channel into the harbor sitting on top of the sand. It is dead low tide. No boats will be going in for quite a while.
And at low tide, you can walk out it seems for mile. Have you ever been to Cape Cod Bay at low tide?
