I was so surprised to see this Mockingbird high in the tree at Fort Hill in the middle of winter. I had never seen one in the winter before. I checked on my Cape Cod Bird Checklist and found that they are common all year round on Cape Cod.
It was a beautiful day and I loved the blue, blue sky in the background. So pretty.
It was 22 degrees with a little breeze yesterday but I had this yearning to take a walk on the beach. I put on my fleece vest, my Gortex jacket and Windstopper hat and mittens. I was ready for whatever weather greeted me.
It was glorious! And I was the only one n the beach! I walked all the way to Nauset Spit, loving the fact that there were no footprints in front of me. How cool!
I thought this was a fun photograph with my shadow in the corner. I love this time of the year on the beach! Pinch me!
Rock Harbor in Orleans is always spectacular whether it is high tide or low tide. I loved this photograph of low tide where you can see the flats go out for miles and the beautiful clouds in the sky. You can see the channel and the channel markers that look like trees in the water.
I took the first photograph about 3-4 weeks ago. I took the second photograph just a few days ago. It was low tide and you can still walk way out. But you don’t see the channel markers. I wonder if they got destroyed with all of the ice that we had. It’s also hard to see where the channel is… I bet it will have to be dredged out again this spring and new channel markers put in.
I always look for the orange or pink sunsets on Cape Cod Bay, but this yellow one was especially beautiful. I took this photograph from the top of one of the higher dunes in Eastham. I loved the fence in the foreground.
I heard the Crows squawking the other day and went outside to see what all the ruckus was about. There, high in the tree in our front yard was this Red-Tailed Hawk perched, apparently looking for lunch. We’ve had one chick hatch in our yard the past two summers, so I wondered if this was the latest one.
He doesn’t look quite mature yet… maybe he’s a juvenile?
I have to add a little more to this story… last weekend I saw some movement way high up in one of the trees in our back yard. I looked up and there was a Red-Tailed Hawk with a branch in its beak. He spread his wings and brought the branch to the nest above. What a treat! It looks like we’ll have nesting hawks in our yard again.
And then we started wondering… is it the original parent or one of his offspring that keeps using the same nest each year? So much fun to watch!
