Have You Seen the New Exit Numbers On Route 6 On Cape Cod?

I’d been coming to Cape Cod since high school and always knew that Nauset Beach and Orleans was Exit 12. Easy to remember… the exits start at 1 at the bridge and go to 12. Not any more. (Click on blog link to see other photos.)

Now the numbers correspond with how many miles the exit is from the Rhode Island border. I have read about the reason why being funding from the federal government but the exits are just weird. One exit is 85 and the next one is 89.  And, if you look closely, there is  a green mile marker ever .2 miles all along the entire highway.

So, if you’re planning a trip to the Cape, be prepared to be a bit disoriented as all of the exit signs have changed.

  1. Long ago, it took me a while to figure out why I was headed from Chatham to Wellfleet on Rte. 6 SOUTH.

These new exit numbers may follow the standard way highways are numbered, but when I get back to the Cape someday, I’m sure I’ll be confused all over again. 🙂

  2. This exit numbering system was implemented on the Maine Turnpike. It sure has taken me quite some time to adjust to it. The old way seemed so much more logical to me!

  3. Who else feels as if this whole idea is messed up? I mean, if MassDOT already agreed to give Route 6 an exemption back in 2016, why did they have to change it…again? I mean, who would drive down from Orleans and be like “Oh well, guess it will take me 89 miles to get to Seekonk!” C’mon, like hardly anyone would think that. I wish we could get the old exit numbers back 🙁

    1. Exactly! That’s what I am saying! They also don’t even match with the mileposts! Like what if you get in an accident and you say “oh I’m by exit 85”, and they go right past you because you messed up the new exit number!Plus they are rebuilding the Cape bridges which is totally not going to confuse people! So much change, I don’t like it either… You should make a petition though about the Exit Numbers, I think you will gain a lot of supporters.
